Everything You Need to Know About Rhinoplasty

What Is Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping the nose and rebalancing its proportion with the rest of the face. Some patients choose this surgery purely for aesthetic reasons, while others do so because of structural issues inside the nose (such as a deviated septum or turbinate hypertrophy) that make breathing difficult. In most cases, aesthetic and functional correction can be planned together in the same operation.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

People with a visible hump on the nasal bridge, a drooping or asymmetric tip, or wide nostrils may be candidates, as may patients with chronic nasal congestion. Surgery is generally considered appropriate once facial growth is complete, typically after age 18. Final suitability is determined after examination and imaging.

Consultation and Planning Process

At the first consultation, the internal and external structure of the nose is examined and any breathing complaints are assessed. By listening to the patient's expectations, a plan is created that is in harmony with the facial features and preserves a natural look. If needed, a computer simulation can be used to preview the likely outcome.

How Does the Operation Take Place?

The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia and can take 2-3 hours depending on the scope of the correction needed. An open or closed technique is chosen according to the nose's needs. Modern surgical methods (e.g. piezosurgery) can help reduce bruising and swelling during bone-structure interventions.

How Does the Recovery Process Progress?

  • First week: A protective splint stays on the nose; mild swelling and bruising are normal.
  • 7-10 days: The splint is removed and a gradual return to daily life begins.
  • 2-3 weeks: Visible swelling largely subsides and returning to social settings becomes comfortable.
  • 6-12 months: The tissues fully settle and the final nasal contour becomes clear during this period.

What Should You Pay Attention To?

During recovery, it is important to protect the nose from sun exposure, avoid strenuous exercise and attend regular check-ups with your doctor. Each patient's recovery speed can vary, so personalised follow-up throughout the process is recommended.
