What Is Chronic Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is the inflammation of the air-filled spaces (sinuses) around the nose. When symptoms last longer than 12 weeks or recur frequently, it is called "chronic sinusitis." Allergies, a deviated septum, polyps or recurrent infections can play a role in it becoming chronic.
What Are the Symptoms?
- Long-lasting nasal congestion
- A feeling of pressure on the face, especially the forehead and cheeks
- Reduced sense of smell
- Post-nasal drip and cough
- Headache and general fatigue
How Does Treatment Begin?
The first approach is usually medical: intranasal corticosteroid sprays, saline nasal rinses and, if needed, antibiotic treatment are tried. An endoscopic examination identifies the source of the obstruction (polyps, turbinate enlargement, septal deviation, etc.).
When Is Surgery Needed?
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is considered for patients who do not respond adequately to medical treatment, whose symptoms recur, or in whom imaging reveals structural obstruction. This method aims to restore natural drainage by opening the sinus outlets with the help of a camera; it is an incision-free technique performed through the nostrils.
The Post-Operative Process
Mild congestion and fatigue may be felt for a few days after FESS. When the doctor's recommendations for nasal cleaning and care are followed, recovery is usually completed quickly. If there are underlying causes such as allergies, managing these is also important for a long-term result.
